Rediscovering Serenity:
My Journey to Kenya’s Masai Mara
Stepping onto the sweeping plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara for the first time in 2009 felt like entering a living masterpiece. It was my first safari experience, and even now, after more than 40 safaris across Africa, it remains my favorite. The Masai Mara is a place where the rhythms of nature unfold with an authenticity that is both humbling and awe-inspiring.
I’ll never forget the way the golden grasses seemed to dance under the expansive sky, or the thrill of spotting a pride of lions lounging beneath an acacia tree. Every moment felt like a scene from The Lion King, and it brought a childlike wonder I hadn’t experienced in years.
Truth be told, I’ve never been much of an animal person, but that changed the moment I stepped into the world of safari. There’s something transformative about seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. It’s not just a visual experience; it’s an emotional one. Each time I’m on safari, I find myself contemplating which animal holds my heart. It’s always a toss-up between the lion, the elephant, and the giraffe. But time and again, the giraffe wins. Its grace, the elegance of its movements, and those stunning eyes framed by impossibly long lashes captivate me. I could watch them for hours, finding peace and grounding in their presence.
Being on safari is my ultimate escape. My busy mind quiets and I am wholly present, scanning the horizon for a glimpse of wildlife, marveling at the raw beauty of nature. There’s nothing quite like the serenity of the African bush.
