In May, I went on an enchanting journey through Sri Lanka, a land of rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. Although often compared to its neighbor, India, Sri Lanka offers a distinct and unexpectedly different experience, marked by its unique culture, serene landscapes, and charming local traditions. Our adventure includes stops in Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Yala, and Galle, before concluding with a serene escape to the Maldives.
Our journey began in the bustling capital city of Colombo. Upon arrival, we checked into our hotel where we enjoyed a relaxing spa treatment to unwind from our travels. The evening was a highlight as we enjoyed tea time at the famous Dilmah tea factory and met with the owner, Malik Fernando. Malik shared with us how his family started the tea company and talked about his love for Sri Lanka. He offered us a unique glimpse into the country's history, beauty, and politics.
We then ventured to Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, a treasure trove of ancient and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Our first stop was the Dambulla Cave Temple, renowned for its stunning Buddha statues and intricate cave paintings. Next, we climbed the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where the breathtaking views from the top were well worth the effort. As the day drew to a close, we visited the sacred city of Anuradhapura, marveling at the magnificent Ruvanwelisaya Stupa, bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun. I was mesmerized by its beauty and the traditions of the Buddhist worshippers.
Our journey continued to Kandy, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. Here, we visited the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic, home to one of Buddhism's most sacred relics. I had never seen so many beautiful lotus flowers and lilies being given as an offering. Everywhere we went in Sri Lanka, these flowers were growing in water ponds, and I had to stop to take in all this beauty. Sri Lanka is also known as the "Gem Island," since it dazzles with its array of precious gemstones. Of course, I had to do some shopping and bring a little something home.
Our next stop was the tranquil Anasa, nestled amidst lush tea plantations. We spent our days exploring the picturesque landscapes, including a charming bridge and a working tea plantation, where we learned about the art of tea making. We also explored lushed cinnamon plantations where we witnessed the skilled peeling of cinnamon bark, and sampled products infused with the fragrant spice, making for a sensory-rich and educational adventure.
Our final stop was Galle with its well-preserved colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. We wandered through the charming boutiques, art galleries, and cafés while enjoying panoramic views of the Indian Ocean from the fort's ramparts.
Only a 45-minute flight to the Maldives we opted for an extended escape. Stay tuned for our next newsletter to learn more about our adventure to the Maldives and its amazingly luxurious resorts.
Our Sri Lankan adventure was a journey of discovery, blending cultural richness, natural beauty, and luxurious comfort. We hope our experiences inspire your next travel plans.
Joyously Yours,
Adele
