A Love Affair with Colombia
The first time I set foot in Colombia in 2008, I was captivated. My journey took me to Bogotá and Cartagena, two cities that are as different as night and day. Little did I know then that this visit would mark the beginning of a love affair—one that would bring me back to Colombia over 15 times, each trip uncovering new layers of beauty, history, and adventure.
Colombia is a country of striking contrasts. Bogotá, the bustling capital, nestled high in the Andes, offered cool mountain air, a rich cultural scene, and the warmth of its people. Here, I found myself sipping on hot chocolate with cheese (a local delicacy) to ward off the chill while exploring La Candelaria’s cobblestone streets, the awe-inspiring Gold Museum, and the stunning views from Monserrate.
Cartagena, on the other hand, embraced me with its tropical humidity, (my curly hair was in full effect) and vibrant Caribbean energy. A city that sings with color and rhythm, the walled city is a dream, with its vibrant bougainvillea-draped balconies, horse-drawn carriages, and colonial-era charm. Shopping here is jaw-dropping—I’ve found some of my most beautiful summer dresses in Cartagena’s boutiques.
Just beyond the city, a boat ride to the stunning Isla de Barú offers pristine white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The perfect place to unwind and relax at the end of your trip.
Let’s not forget Medellin. Often, when people think of beaches in Colombia, Cartagena comes to mind. But Medellín, with its lush landscapes and year-round spring-like weather, also has hidden gems. A quick escape to the nearby coast reveals breathtaking beaches where the mountains meet the sea. Medellín itself is a marvel of transformation—a city that has reinvented itself with innovation, art, and resilience.
If there’s one thing I always look forward to in Colombia, it’s the food. From the perfectly grilled arepas stuffed with cheese to the fresh ceviche in Cartagena, every meal is a sensory delight. But nothing warms my heart quite like a bowl of Ajiaco soup in Bogotá, a dish that feels like a hug from an old friend.
Fun fact – Did you know that Colombia is also one of the world's largest exporters of flowers, particularly roses? The country’s high-altitude climate and fertile soil make it the perfect environment for growing vibrant, long-lasting blooms.
One of the best ways I’ve experienced Colombia is through women's journeys—bringing together a group of incredible women to explore, laugh, and create memories. There’s something special about sharing a meal of fresh seafood, dancing to the beats of vallenato and cumbia, shopping for beautiful dresses, and swapping stories while enjoying the sunset views on a boat ride. Every trip is an opportunity to connect—not just with each other but with the soul of Colombia itself.
Colombia keeps calling me back, and I know my love affair with this incredible country is far from over, there’s always something new to discover. For those who have yet to experience Colombia, let’s start planning your trip!
