The Meaning of “Life”
Friends,
Some very interesting words ran across my path this week. First, I read a quote the other day which said, “these ARE the good ole’ days…enjoy them!” I was struck by how true that is. Second, you should know I’m a big 70s music fan. I heard a song by Cat Stevens yesterday which I’ve never heard before titled - Oh, Very Young. A lyric from this song struck me: “You’re only dancing on this earth for a short while. Those words really got me thinking. Do we enjoy our present? Do we dance while we’re here?
I don’t know about you, but I want to do both.
So often we can live in the land of remembrance - “ahhh…those were the good ole’ days, weren’t they?” Or we live in Tomorrowland… “when this/that happens, then I’ll do (that thing I’ve wanted to do)” It’s hard sometimes, to relish in the joy and blessing of the day we are in, the current moment, our daily interactions - but it’s here that we find true meaning.
The past year has been nothing short of a doozy, as my mother would say. COVID-19 plus a difficult election year plus natural disasters. It’s been crazy! 2020 has been a year of pivot, survive, hunker down, quarantine, isolate, test and retest…and you know what, we’ve done what is required. We are a resilient people!
Friends in Texas have had the latest onslaught, and as much as our friend Sandra wanted to escape her present situation last week, she shared how it taught her so much!
1.) Everything physical can be destroyed very quickly.
2.) If we put our hopes in buildings or tangible items, we can lose everything.
3.) Memories and relationships transcend “stuff.” Investment in experiences that can never be destroyed is the best investment!
4.) As I watched people dealing with destroyed property and assets all week last week, it became clear to me that I do not want life’s opportunities to pass me by. I want to experience everything I can....this is why I travel.
Will “life” every “return to normal”? I don’t know.
I think our definition of normal is forever changed. Change can be a good thing. I would encourage you to remember that “the meaning of life” is that “these are the good ole’ days - enjoy them”.
Carpe Diem - Seize the Day! Enjoy. Dance. Squeeze every ounce out of this life that it has to give. We would love to help you do that. Let’s vow to not let life escape us! Let’s get out there! Africa is waiting!
